Architectural Styles - Orange County retraces the extraordinary history of Homes, Architecture in Orange County, California
NEWPORT BEACH, CA - When it comes to remarkable homes, whether historic or contemporary, classically traditional or wildly exuberant, Orange County stands apart. Now, for the first time, one book traces the county's journey from the humble adobe homes of pioneering days in 1776 to today's modern residential marvels.
Architectural Styles - Orange County is the first comprehensive guide to the evolution of residential styles in Orange County. It is a story of how styles and methods of building evolved, how movements trickled in to our world, and how trend-setters and visionaries here helped set the standard for architecture around the world.
These homes tell stories about the development of Orange County communities into the world we know today. How our county grew is a story unique to California and to our place in the developing frontier. It is a tale of remarkable structures and of remarkable people. Of homes both simple and elaborate, mansions and castles; a maharajah with tiger-skin rugs and chests full of rubies.
It is the story of some of the finest architects of history, visionary builders and also visionary homeowners, people who drew inspiration from architecture’s titans and nature’s magnificence. Most important, the book is about preserving these stories and this history, through words and photos.
Whether you are a serious observer of architecture, just enjoy good stories or are looking for inspiration to build or remodel, you will enjoy this trip through time.
The book is the culmination of a seven-year exploration by lifelong Orange County resident, architect Richard H. Dodd. Taking thousands of photos and interviewing hundreds of residents he traveled to every corner of Orange County’s present and delved deep into times long ago. Thanks to that long journey we all have a window on the past and insight into our present.
